Yoga

What is Yoga?

Originating in India thousands of years ago, yoga is an ancient science and one of the oldest approaches to wellness in the world.  The word yoga translates as “union” and its aim is to reconnect the body, mind and spirit to a natural state of harmony. Through the practice of yoga, a healthy mind is best achieved through a healthy body.  A stronger and healthier body allows the mind to become calmer and a natural state of harmony is achieved.

Today, the therapeutic potential of yoga may be a perfect remedy for the daily struggles and stresses of modern life. Focusing on 'posture', 'breath' and 'relaxation' the mind, body and spirit can be rebalanced and life can be approached with a renewed sense of calm and inner peace.

What to Expect

Many people are drawn to Yoga as a way to develop their fitness, flexibility and suppleness, or as a pain relief remedy or as a way to de-stress and relax.  My approach focuses on 'posture' 'coordination of breath' and 'relaxation and wellness':

Posture

Yoga is like music.  The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul creates the symphony of life. - B.K.S. Iyengar

The lessons consist of a series of postures which are held while focusing on the breath.  These postures are designed to build stamina, strength and flexibility of the whole body.  The postures use every part of the body, stretching and toning the muscles, mobilising the joints as well as the stimulating the internal organs all of which promotes good health. By working the body internally and externally a whole being wellness can be achieved.

Coordination of Breath

A yogi measures the span of life by the number of breaths, not by the number of years. -Swami Sivananda

The role of the breath is paramount in the practice of yoga. The coordination of movement with breath brings the postures to life and forms a meditation in motion.  On average, only 10% of a person’s lung capacity is used on a daily basis. In yoga breathing techniques or ‘pranayama’  helps to fully utilise the lungs. By breathing effectively more oxygen is transported through the blood and into the brain.   By deepening and lengthening the breath through yoga, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated. This allows the mind to calm and the body to feel energised.

Relaxation and Wellness

Yoga is the silence to be here and now. - Osho

Living a fast-paced lifestyle filled with responsibilities, sensory overload, and external stimulations can deplete energy and bring on stress and exhaustion.  Through posture and breath -work the body and mind will feel rejuvenated, rebalanced and recharged.   A regular yoga practice helps stress dissolve, and enhances one's health and well-being and helps us to live in the present moment.

Private Yoga Lessons

Each private yoga class is specifically designed to suit each individual. The beauty of a one to one yoga lesson is that it enables every individual to be treated in exactly the right way for them.  Lessons cater for all abilities (beginners to advanced) and sessions will adapt as you progress, so that they are always enjoyable, relaxing and therapeutic.

Yoga cultivates body/mind integration and can improve flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, concentration and relaxation and it also helps to manage pain and fatigue.

Initial consultation

Prior to your first lesson, you will be offered a free consultation to see how yoga can work best for you. (Which can be done by phone).  In this we will talk through your case and establish your needs and preferences. By taking into consideration your history and circumstances we set about finding the ideal yoga practice for you.  The lessons can be designed to follow your own particular area of interest such as: improving fitness, personal development, back pain, recovery from illness, reducing and coping with anxiety or stress, working on stiffness or limited mobility, digestive and circulatory problems, pregnancy and post-natal recovery, supporting meditation, breathing & restorative practices and relaxation, etc.

Small Group Classes

Small group classes are limited to up to four students. This is a great way to deepen your practice with a focus on therapeutic principles, alignment, breathing, relaxation and much more in a personal supportive setting.

This type of session is ideal if you have a group of two or three friends or family members who would like to schedule a session together, or would like to set up a private session for corporate employees,

Please get in touch if you want to be added to the semi-private classes invitation lists and I’ll get back to you about availability. I email me and we can arrange a time.

Wonderful relaxing classes

'At the beginning, I was worried about my stiffness. Then, you made the practice easy. That little tweak created significantly more space within my posture and that little belt and brick helped release my muscular tension. Furthermore, you’ve reminded me that I’m capable. It helps me when I swim too.

The empowering words that accompanied that flow sequence brought light into my heart and joy into my being. I am looking forward to the yoga day of the week, seeing you, inhaling and exhaling with the great music.

What’s more, the practice of mindfulness is powerful'.

Incredible Experience

'Your classes are of great value to me and the other yogis, I’m sure. They allow me to unwind from the stresses of the week. I become calmer after the class. And more positive. I sometimes float home, I’m so relaxed! And the feeling stays with me the whole evening.

From a physical perspective, I’m loving the stretching and focusing on the breathing. I like how you focus on one part of the body each class. So you can feel a real difference there. It’s great to work on a part of the body that often gets overlooked like today, or over-worked! It’s nice to have each class so different, to keep things interesting. The props/equipment are fun too.

I think the style and pace of your class is perfect for the group. it’s accessible for the beginners but also interesting for those who have done yoga before. I like how you give alternative versions of each posture, so we can chose how far to take each one.

You explain everything very clearly. And obviously demonstrate it well! You are very patient and accepting of the different levels people are at. Allowing everyone to feel relaxed, confident and not pressured'.

What really impressed me about the detox program was that several months after my treatment the effects did not fade.  I saw notable improvements in my health, wellness and vitality.  I would recommend this program to anyone wanting to treat themselves to a total whole body makeover'.
